Sometimes you just need an expert to help you install that perfect bathroom. That’s the view of Kathryn Hughes, writing in The Guardian’s Comment is Free section, whose new year’s resolution is to get in a handyman or woman to fix her DIY dilemmas. Instead of staring guiltily at coathooks that have been sulking in their box for three years, now all you have to do is hand over your credit-card details.

The idea that untrained people could, by an act of desire, transform themselves into skilled tradesmen and women was always a delusion.
